bankHometown Donates $5,000 to the Putnam Veterans Advisory Committee in Support of Afghanistan Memorial

Oxford, Massachusetts — November 22, 2024

bankHometown is honored to announce a $5,000 donation to the Putnam Veterans Advisory Committee, supporting the creation of an Afghanistan Memorial in Putnam. This contribution underscores bankHometown’s commitment to honoring veterans and recognizing the sacrifices made by those who served in Afghanistan, ensuring their legacy lives on within the community.

The Afghanistan Memorial is a significant initiative by the Putnam Veterans Advisory Committee to create a place for reflection, remembrance, and respect for service members who served during the Afghanistan conflict. Located in Veterans Park, 127 Church Street, in the heart of Putnam, this monument serves as a constant reminder of the dedication, courage, and sacrifices of military personnel, as well as the support of their families and loved ones.

“We are deeply grateful for the service of all veterans, and especially moved by the opportunity to support a monument that pays tribute to those who served in Afghanistan,” said Robert J. Morton, president and CEO of bankHometown. “Our hope is that this memorial will serve as a place of peace and reflection for veterans, families, and community members who want to honor and remember those who have served.”

Sergeant First Class Forrest Scott of the Connecticut National Guard, who served with the 1/102nd Infantry Battalion in Afghanistan said of the memorial, “This memorial stands as testament to the courage and sacrifice of every service member who served in Afghanistan, a place where their legacy can endure.” He added, “but more importantly this is for the service members who didn’t make it home, those we can only visit in memory now. ”

The Putnam Veterans Advisory Committee has been diligently working to bring the Afghanistan Memorial project to life and has garnered support from community members and local businesses. bankHometown’s contribution brought the committee one step closer to achieving this goal, helping to cover the costs of construction and dedication of the memorial.

“We are incredibly grateful to bankHometown for their generous donation,” said Robert Challinor, Jr., representative of the Putnam Veterans Advisory Committee. “Their support allowed us to move forward with this important project that honors and recognizes our Afghanistan veterans for generations to come.”

The donation aligns with bankHometown’s ongoing commitment to strengthening communities through local giving and supporting veterans’ organizations and initiatives.

In addition to the Afghanistan memorial, the committee received a generous $300,000 from local businesses, as well as members of the community, for the remodeling of Veterans Park, enhancing its accessibility, beauty, and functionality as a gathering space for the community to honor all who have served. These upgrades have created a lasting, respectful environment where future generations can reflect on the dedication of our veterans and the legacy they have left for our community.
