Identity Theft Awareness Week: Warning signs of identity theft.
Identity Theft Awareness Week is January 27-31. This week, we’re covering all things Identity Theft and offering up ways to protect yourself.
Did you know, fraud and identity theft cases have nearly tripled over the last decade? Identity thieves are crafty and always coming up with new ways to scam unsuspecting victims. It’s important to recognize early warning signs so you can take active steps to recover your personal and financial information. Here are some common warning signs to look out for:
- Unauthorized purchases on your accounts
- Bills for products or services you did not purchase
- Debt collection calls about credit cards or other loans you do not have
- Unrecognizable inquiries or accounts on your credit report you didn’t initiate or open
- Denials for loans you apply for
- Mysterious or unexpected calls, texts or emails
- Missing mail
- Withdrawals from your bank accounts that you didn’t make
- Tax issues, including W2s and 1099s from companies you did not work for
One of the reasons that identity theft is so prevalent is that it’s often hard to spot before it’s too late. Familiarize yourself with these warning signs and take action if you spot them so you can safeguard yourself and loved ones from becoming victims.
